Summer Dog Walking: 5 Hazards of Summer Dog Walks

Paws Off the Pavement: Navigating 5 Hazards of Summer Dog Walking

As the summer sun blankets us in its warmth, the idea of a leisurely stroll with your furry friend may seem idyllic, however, we need to be careful with our summer dog walking.

It's crucial to recognise the potential dangers lurking in the scorching heat. In this guide, we explore 5 hazards of summer dog walking and how to keep your canine companion cool and safe.

1. Paw Pad Predicament:

The asphalt and concrete can reach scorching temperatures under the summer sun. This poses a significant risk to your dog's sensitive paw pads, potentially causing burns and discomfort. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when the ground is cooler, or stick to grassy areas.

2. Heatstroke Havoc:

Dogs are more susceptible to heatstroke than humans, and walking them during the peak heat of the day can escalate this risk. Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, lethargy, and difficulty breathing. Always carry water, take frequent breaks in the shade, and be vigilant for any signs of overheating.

3. Dehydration Dilemma:

Hydration is key, and the summer heat can quickly lead to dehydration. Bring a portable water bowl and offer your dog water regularly during walks. Watch for signs of dehydration, such as sunken eyes, lethargy, and dry gums.

4. Burned Nose and Ears:

Dogs with coloured noses and ears are more susceptible to sunburn. Applying pet-safe sunscreen to these areas before heading out can provide protection. Consider using doggy sunglasses for breeds with exposed eyes.

5. Brachycephalic Breeds Beware:

Breeds with short noses, such as Bulldogs and Pugs, are more prone to heat-related issues due to their compromised respiratory systems. Limit their exposure to the heat and choose cooler times of the day for walks.

If you notice your dog looking uncomfortable or showing signs of pain, check their paws. These are sensitive and imagaine if you had no shoes on for the whole of your life! They will need some good old TLC from time to time. When writing this blog we researched a number of articles and found a lot of benefit from this one about what to look out for if your dog has a problem with their paws. Worth a read.

While summer walks can be enjoyable bonding experiences, the safety and well-being of your furry friend should always come first. Be mindful of the temperature, opt for shaded routes, and pay attention to your dog's behaviour. By understanding and mitigating the dangers of summer dog walking in the heat of the day, you can ensure that every stroll is a safe and pleasant adventure for both you and your canine companion.
